Laurel And Hardy Dvd Sets
Almost 1/2 the box set (and hence the high $) is because of the colorized versions of most films. Worse, these colorizations are notorious for being soft, fuzzy and garish. And there doesn't seem to be any order to the movies.There is a Dutch box set coming out in a few months which will have the movies in chronilogical order, no Colorized versions and the complete Hal Roach series. No reviews yet on the quality, but believe these to be based on the Kinowelt masters.Actually, i think the kinowelt box sets still set the standard for the best L&H transfers, from what I have read (don't have any - yet).Why Universal would even bother wasting any money on the colorized versions is beyond me. Wouldn't it be a safe assumption that anyone buying this set would be a die-hard L&H fan, and that these folks are exactly the ones who would NOT want to see (or pay for) the colorized versions?
The colorized versions are an unnecessary waste of space and I won't be watching any of them.Some of the reviews that have appeared on R2 sites have already savaged the color versions as looking fake and just plain awful.There is only limited information on the Dutch sets. A collection of short films is already out and a collection of features is coming soon.The German sets you mentioned seem to lack both themes and any kind of organization although they had previously been the best available transfers.Ultimately, I decided to get the British set because of the variety of extras and the reliability of Amazon UK.I also found this web site that has started some comparison reviews of the British, Dutch and German releases.
