A VDS is a centrally managed and distributed switch while the VSS is locally managed on each ESXi host. The communication flow is this:1. VM1 sends a message destined for VM2 in same layer 2 segment2. ESXi host knows what MAC addresses on currently available locally (same ESXi host)3. If VM2 is on same esxi host and on same segment packet is delivered4. If VM2 is on same subnet but different ESXi host or physical then forward the packet out the uplink with VLAN tag and let the physical network deliver5.
