R® Factory Reset Procedures Caution: Many of these procedures will erase all memory in the unit. Make sure you have backed up any data you wish to keep before performing these procedures! If a unit is not listed here, it does not have an initialization procedure that is user-executable.
I recently purchased a Roland D-550. Like my many other synths, using Midi OX, I thought I could load patches via Sys-ex, but Im having a hard time. I cant load a single patch, nor can I load a bank into the D-550 from my PC.All indications show MidiOX working correctly when I send sys-ex, and this is verified by the MOTU MidiTimePiece blinking lights showing data going to the Roland D-550.But thats where the problem starts. The D-550 midi light doesn't blink to show any data received.I dont believe I should have to change many options on the D-550 other than make sure sys-ex is on.Here are the parameters:Tune/protect OFFMidi 1. Midi ch 01Control B.ChSepCh 01Omni OFFMidi 2 aftertouch, bender, mod, and volume all ONMidi 3 hold, porta, prog change, exclusive all ONMidi 4 control change chase OFF Ton Bal OFFRoland is a bit brief in the manual about data transfers. It covers 'data transfers via Midi' which I guess means sys-ex. And it covers data dumps, data loads, and the Handshake, one-way mode, and to press and hold.
But thats about it. Again, I dont think I should have to set up a data load to the 'waiting' position, and then send sys-ex. Im thinking as long as sys-ex is ON it should receive this data automaticly.
Am I right? At this point Im really ready to try something other than MidiOX to get patches from my PC into the D-550 so if anyone has any advise please let me know. The D-50 is an old machine. That means that it cant handle the rates that most modern computers transmit MIDI sysex data.
I had to change settings in Cakewalk so that my D-50 would not give me an error evertime I tried sending it SYSEX data.Read this link (scroll down to bottom):LOADING SYSEX BULK DUMPS FROM CAKEWALK SONAR: The Roland D-50 is an older generation machine, so I found that when I'm sending sysex data from modern sequencers such as the one I use, Cakewalk Sonar, I get the 'MIDI transmission error' message, because the synth cannot handle the speed at which the sequencer is sending the sysex data. The solution, found on Sonar's sysex Help section, is to tweak the 'TTSEQ.ini' file in the Sonar folder - basically setting the 'SysxSendPacketSize' to 64 as shown in the screen print below. This makes the flow slow enough that the D-50 will be able to handle it.ALSO IMPORTANT: When setting up the D-50 to receive the sysex data: MAKE SURE YOU HOLD DOWN THE 'DATA TRANSFER' button when you press '(B.LOAD)'. Then you can release the two buttons and finally press 'ENTER'. If you don't keep the 'DATA TRANSFER' button pressed at the same time, the bulk load won't work.

Finally, sometimes the D-50 will freeze after completing the data transfer. Not to worry. Just turn it off and on again, and it will go back to normal, with the new patches you just loaded in memory ready to play.ALSO NOTE: SOME MIDI INTERFACES DON'T SEEM TO WORK WITH THE D-50 - This kept me scratching my head! I was trying to load patches from Sonar to the D-50 via an M-Audio 'MIDISport Uno' interface: I have used this handy little interface extensively with my laptop and never had any problem. BUT, with the D-50, THE 'UNO' DOES NOT WORK, no matter what settings on the ttseq.ini file. After an hour of trying and getting MIDI errors, I switched to my older M-Audio USB MIDISport 1x1, and that WORKS FINE.
In the past, I used an Opcode MIDI Translator that also worked fine. And I will try with the MIDI on my M-Audio FireWire 1814 and will report soon about that one.

Brzilian, thanks for the tip and after many hours of fiddling around I discovered it was the wrong sequence of button pushing as you outlined. Not only that, you DO need to go into the midi load and in addition the midi light on the synth will NOT light up indicating a sys-ex transfer.

The only indication is on the readout where it says 'loading'I have also bookmarked that link that helped me.it would appear that loading single patches still does not work probably due to the age of the synth, however I am now running MIDI-OX out of an old Windows 98 machine and I would guess MIDI-OX might have some controls to slow down the transfer rateif anyonw would care to list some good or large free weblinks for d-50 sys-ex files i would love to start downloading.
