'This is probably the best quick-intro to Islamic history I've seen. It's full of references to Islamic scripture and relevant books, and it's organized in a way that makes it easy to navigate. There's no doubt that Spencer is taking sides, as usual. He stands for democracy, pluralism and freedom, and his mission is to warn us of what challenges our most cherished values.

Knowing the background of the Jihad movement is invaluable in this effort. The book is an easy read, quite a page-turner. It tried to cover a lot of ground in not too many pages, and obviously cannot get too much into detail. This makes Spencer's book easily digestable for many.

Some might prefer the similar, but more scholary 'Sword of the Prophet' by Serge Trifkovic.' By a Book Depository customer.
