Very SimpleYou see when you modify the commands, the modication takes place in the 'running-config' file sitting inside the Random Access Memory (RAM). Where as your 'startup-config' is present in Non-Volatile RAM or NVRAM. Now you have messed up your running configuration, then simply reload wiil kill everything in the running config and also will bring the startup-config back automatically as it is the procedure set in the booting process of your device. As with the 'copy startup-config running-config', well it has one draw back.

Which is that, this command Does NOT 'replace' the running-config with startup-config, instead it 'Merges' the contents of running-config and startup-config, then how the wrong modification will be reverse, no way to reverse the modication with this command. The reload simply cleans the current running-config and brings the startup-config into running-config. Startup and running. Now you make changes such as modifying the fa0/1 to fa0/10. Before saving to startup configuration file you also have made so many other NEW changes, changes that were not yet mentioned in the startup file before.AT THIS POINT now suppose you have to revert the changes you made to fa0/1 to fa0/10 again while still at the CLI, remember you have not saved the current 'running' file to startup file yet. In this situation the easiest way to revert the partial settings and keeping the partial seeting - both, such as with fa0/1 to fa0/10 can be changed with the command 'copy star run' while the new changes are will remain present which were not present in the startup file before and the old one will replace the new one such as fa0/1 to fa0/10. Hence, half work is reverted to old settings and half (new settings - not present in the startup file before) will be merged. And your time and efforts will remain intact.
